Does Your Skin Need Cupping Massage Therapy? All You Need to Know

There are several types of massage therapies for the body. One type is cupping therapy, a traditional Chinese medicine that involves using cups or plastic bags on the skin to create suction and draw blood from the area under treatment.

Cupping therapy has been used in Eastern cultures like China for thousands of years as an alternative treatment for many conditions. It’s believed to help with pain relief, detoxification, and even weight loss.

What is cupping massage therapy?

Cupping is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that involves the use of cups or glass tubes placed on specific points of the body. The cups create suction which pulls blood into these areas, stimulating them and helping to release toxins from the body. The therapy can be very beneficial for people who suffer from chronic pain, muscle tension, stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, arthritis, and other health issues.

How does cupping massagee therapy work?

The cups are made of thin glass and have small holes at the top. They are then placed over the area where they want the suction to occur, usually on the back of the hand or arm. Once the cup is applied, the therapist will apply pressure to the bottom of the cup using their thumb or fingers. As the cup is pressed down, the air inside is forced out through the holes in the top of the cup. When this happens, the vacuum created by the cup draws blood into the area around the cup. The suction also helps to stimulate the lymphatic system, which is responsible for draining fluid from the tissues throughout the body.

What does cupping massage do for me?

Cupping massage can help relieve pain, reduce inflammation, improve circulation, increase energy levels and boost metabolism. It may also be used as part of a holistic treatment plan for chronic conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, migraines, sports injuries, stress management, and more.

How often should I have it done?

You can receive a cupping massage once or twice weekly or even daily, depending on your goals for cupping treatment. For example, if you want to lose weight, you might only get one weekly session. If you’re looking to treat a condition like arthritis, you might opt for two sessions.

Remember, this is alternative medicine, and results vary with different clients. However, most clients report positive results after just one session.

How many types of cupping are there?

There are three main types of cupping: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Meridian Cupping, and Acupressure. TCM cupping uses cups shaped like a bowl. These cups are filled with hot water and placed directly on the skin. Meridian cupping uses cups that look similar to acupuncture needles. These cups are inserted into the skin and left to cool off. Acupressure uses cups that resemble the shape of a human finger. These cups are placed on certain body parts and held firmly in place for several seconds before being removed.

These methods are categorized broadly into dry and wet cupping.

  • Dry cupping uses cups without any liquid inside. Instead, the cups are heated up to a temperature that is slightly below boiling point. Dry cupping is performed by placing the cups directly on the skin and holding them there for anywhere between 5-30 minutes.

  • Wet cupping is another form of dry cupping that involves soaking the cups in warm water before use. It allows the cups to stay in contact with the skin longer. Wet cupping is typically performed by applying the cups to the skin and leaving them there for 10-20 minutes.

When should I avoid it?

Anyone with an open wound, infection, or broken skin, shouldn’t receive a cupping massage. You should also avoid receiving cupping when you are pregnant or nursing because of the risk of burns.

Is cupping safe?

Yes! There are no known side effects associated with cupping massage therapy. You may experience mild discomfort when the cups are first applied, but this typically goes away within minutes. Some people may feel a slight tingling during the procedure, but this should subside quickly.

There have never been any reported cases of injury caused by cupping massage. Some studies show that cupping massage can speed up healing time compared to conventional treatments.

However, there are some things you should consider before having it performed:

• Make sure you’re in good health. Consult your doctor first to be cleared for the procedure.

• Have someone drive you home afterward. You don’t want to risk getting back into your car and driving off while under the influence of the therapy.

• Wear loose-fitting clothing so you won’t feel self-conscious during the procedure.

• Don’t drink alcohol before receiving the treatment. Alcohol can make you drowsy and affect your ability to relax.

• Avoid taking certain medications before the treatment. Some medications can cause side effects when combined with cupping massage.

What results can I expect from cupping massage?

The benefits of cupping massage vary from person to person. While some people report feeling relaxed and refreshed following their treatments, others say they experience increased energy, improved sleep quality, and reduced anxiety.
